ETRUSCAN TOMBS TREK & CASTLE CLIMB

 Substitute the city for an overground labyrinth of tombs and trails known as "Banditaccia, an ancient Etruscan necropolis spanning 400 hectares, then relive a thousand years history in a coastal castle that has many tales to tell.

 The first chapter of this full day story from Rome is privately guided. The second chapter plays out on the Tyrrhenian shoreline, and comprises two consecutive self-guided tours.

 Arriving from Rome by rail, your private archaeologist guide will walk you through a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Enter the lost City of Tombs, an expanse of dark funerary structures that has lain silent for over 3,000 years, and lends an other-worldy atmosphere today.

 We just don't know very much about Etruria and the Etruscan people, so little written information about their lives has survived. Nonetheless, wandering around this fantastical place inspires the most profound thoughts and reflections on humanity.

 After the Etruscan tour and a second short train ride to the coast, roam free while exploring the towers, turrets and courtyard of a fabulous fairytale castle.

 Originally constructed over Pyrgi, an ancient Etruscan seaport, the castle has been used innumerable times by visionary movie directors, such is its evocative nature. A Saracen tower is the oldest part of the structure, dating back to the 9th century.

 On this, perhaps our most enchanting day trip from Rome, escapism is the reality. A contemplative walk along the shore can be taken ahead of your third and final train ride home.

At Banditaccia, guide Marta gave us a brilliant tour of Etruscology and the coastal castle was beautiful, a wonderful place for relaxation and sightseeing. Thanks so much!

 Rated 4.9 / 5 by Mark S on June 6th, 2021  We booked this day out away from Rome after wasting over $600 on a VIP private tour of the Colosseum that left us at the mercy of huge crowds everywhere for the entire time. For about the same expense, In Rome Tours introduced us to AMAZING places. The Banditaccia necropoli were incredible, also our archaeologist guide, Susanna, who specializes in Etruscan culture. Train rides were great, air conditioned rests between all the walking and touring. Just the most perfect day ever! Grazie to Pete, he arranged this for us at totally short notice, a very helpful and knowledgeable English guy who owns this great tour company.
